El Chalten
El Chalten
About 216 km away from El Calafate, at the north of Viedma Lake and at the foot of the famous Fitz Roy Hill, this small town appears, and offers a beautiful sight, apart from giving us the possibility to do outdoor activities such us high and low intensity trekking, or climbing vertical walls, which is ideal for the most demanding climbers. Just 37 km away, there is Del Desierto (Desert) Lake, where we can see ancient woods, glaciers and brooks that contradict its name. Also known as the Trekking Capital, El Chaltén offers a wide range of hotel services, ranging from the simplest, for backpackers, to those for the most demanding tourists, with excellent accommodation, which provide comprehensive services. This area's economy relies absolutely on tourism, which is growing year after year and its operating season is also lasting longer. Regular buses run throughout the year on a regular basis, with one or two departures to and from El Calafate, depending on the time of the year. Due to the isolated geographical location, El Chaltén cannot offer online services yet, such as Internet connection, mobile phones or ATMs, it is necessary to take these details into account when travelling. To sum up, the activities that we can do in the area include: trekking, mountaineering, camping, horseback riding, going on excursions and others such as photography, climbing courses, wildlife observation/watching, fishing, rafting or visiting tourist country estates.
